About us

Kay Clifford is an early years specialist having spent over 30 years teaching in early years and Key Stage 1 classrooms.  More recently Kay has been responsible for the training and development of trainee teachers in both Early Years and phonics, leading her to evaluate and critique the provision available.

Fishing for Phonics has been developed as a high quality systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) designed to get all children reading quickly.  The unique aspect of this programme is the way that Kay has integrated the development of handwriting into the scheme making it equally about getting the children writing quickly.  This is achieved by carefully mapping the phonemes with letter formation patterns enabling the children to build sequentially on motor pathways.

Fishing for Phonics is a multisensory programme designed to engage children in practical learning activities to ensure every child develops firm foundations to grow a love of reading.

Fishing for Phonics has developed and fully implemented at Castle Hill Infant and Junior Schools, who are part of Asset Education in Suffolk.  Feedback from teachers is that the plans are detailed and supportive and that they enjoy teaching the scheme, the children enjoy the consistent structure and routines of the lessons and parents are pleased with how quickly their children are learning to read.
